Age Friendly

“Age-friendly” is the idea of making structures and services more accessible and inclusive for seniors with varying needs and capacities.

In May of 2022, Banff Town Council passed a resolution to actively support, promote and work towards becoming an age-friendly community.

An age-friendly committee of community members has been created to guide this initiative. The Town of Banff is seeking Age-Friendly Community Designation from the provincial government as part of the process to improve our community.

Our community is examining eight different topic areas of an Age-Friendly Community established by the the World Health Organization:

  • outdoor spaces and buildings
  • transportation
  • housing
  • social participation
  • respect and social inclusion
  • civic participation and employment
  • communication and information
  • community support and health services

Age-friendly qualities would help strengthen the community, improve businesses, and make life better for all residents. The Town of Banff is working on completing an age-friendly community profile and assessment of services and infrastructure for adults 55 years old and older.

A Phase 1 What We Heard Report ( PDF) has been prepared to summarize all the input provided in the focus group sessions. Please click the link to open and review the full report to better understand the summarized perspectives in the survey below. The document is also in the Document Section of this web page.

We are seeking feedback on the first phase of consultation with a survey (in print or online below) from:

  • Feedback from Banff residents who already provided input in one of the sessions – did we summarize your input correctly or did we miss anything?
  • Feedback from Banff residents who did not participate in the focus group sessions – does the input look right to you and is anything missing?
  • We also want to learn what people think are the most important issues we should address.

The information gathered in this survey will be added to the What We Heard Report and provided to the Age-Friendly Committee and Banff Town Council for consideration of next steps in making Banff more age-friendly.

Please go to the survey link below to review and respond to the most frequent statements or most strongly held opinions that we collected in the previous focus groups.

Phase 3

The information gathered in the feedback survey will be added to the What We Heard Report and provided to the Age-Friendly Committee and Banff Town Council for consideration of next steps in making Banff more age-friendly.

Pending Council's consideration and consultation with the Age-Friendly Committee an application to the provincial government will be submitted seeking the Age-Friendly Community Designation. The community designation will also afford us the opportunity to seek out and apply for other funding opportunities and grants to support our goal of becoming more age friendly, year over year.

Phase 4

The Town of Banff will:

  • Work with the Age-Friendly Committee
  • Complete an age-friendly community profile with an inventory of the programs, services and initiatives that already exist in the community
  • develop an Age-friendly Report and an Action Plan
