The Bear Street fireplace is a key feature to the street design - a publicly accessible gathering space inviting visitors and residents alike to linger on Bear Street. Gathering around a wood fire is an authentic national park experience that naturally brings people together and activates the five senses.
The Bear Street fireplace was intentionally designed to operate as a natural gas fire or a wood-burning fire. To date, the fireplace on Bear Street has been gas fueled.
On January 30, 2023, the Town of Banff started a one-month trial to better understand the operational needs and maintenance of a centrally located wood burning fireplace and give time for residents and visitors an opportunity to experience it. When it returns to being fueled by natural gas, a button will be available for anyone to ignite the fire to run for 15 minutes before an automatic shut off.
